      Cuthbertson Middle School Band

This year's beginning band class is now being organized.  The Cuthbertson Middle School Band Program is looking for talented, excited, and hard-working individuals to join our 6th grade Beginning Band. Students are not required to have any prior musical knowledge or training to join band; they will learn to read music and play one of the band instruments.

It is hoped that you will allow your child to participate in this unique educational opportunity!  Band is a regularly scheduled class in the school day and is free of charge.  It does not conflict with extra-curricular activities such as sports.  The 6th grade year is when students are allowed to be in band and experience is not required.  Last year at Cuthbertson, over 1/3 of all 6th grade students took band!

Students, you will be evaluated on and have a chance to try out several different instruments.  This procedure is very important to determine which instrument is best suited for the student.  Students, make sure to keep in mind what instruments you like and which one you try out the best on…this will make you very successful!  An instrument recommendation sheet will be sent home. Please do not purchase or rent an instrument until you see this recommendation!  BAND REGISTRATION DAY will be held at Cuthbertson Middle School on Saturday May 7th where you and your parents can drop in at any of the session beginning at 9am, 10am, or 11am and make arrangements to rent or purchase the instrument you were recommended for.  We include the following instruments in our 6th grade band program:

Woodwind instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Saxophone.

Brass instruments include:  Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, and Baritone.

Note:  Percussion instruments are not taught until later in the school year so that attention can be focused on learning the discipline of music.  During the first three months, aspiring percussionists should begin their musical experience on a wind instrument so that music reading skills and discipline can be taught effectively.  Later in the year students wishing to play percussion will be evaluated for suitability, and a small number of qualified students will be selected to join the percussion section.

We hope that you will consider taking band next year.  We have a great time making music and offer many opportunities for students to be successful!

      Musically yours,

      Katie Ebert       Todd Ebert
